Evangelion Unit-04 (エヴァンゲリオン 4号機, Evangerion Yongōki?) was an Evangelion model developed in the United States. While Unit-04 is never seen in the series, promotional materials and other appearances make it appear to be a silver or chrome version of Evangelion Unit-03.

History[]

Neon Genesis Evangelion[]

Unit-04 was a test subject for installing an S² Engine into an ordinary Evangelion, likely by using the one recovered from Shamshel. Unfortunately, there was an accident involving the S² Engine which caused Unit-04, the facility it was in, and everything within an over 80-kilometer diameter to be consumed by a Dirac Sea. While the S² Engine experiment was a failure, use of an S² Engine was later perfected for the Mass Production Evangelions.

Other Media[]

Neon Genesis Evangelion manga[]

Like in the anime, Kensuke Aida passingly mentions that Unit-04 was lost.

Neon Genesis Evangelion: ANIMA[]

In the extra pages, developed to the printed book version, Unit-04 is depicted as the same as Evangelion Unit-03 but using an external S² engine attached on its back. It is illustrated by illustrator Ryota Magaki.

Neon Genesis Evangelion: Angelic Days[]

NERV develops five Evangelions to fight the Angels. Six pilots from the Tokyo-3 school are chosen to pilot them. Among them, Kensuke Aida is designated as the pilot of Evangelion Unit-04.

When several Angels appear in Tokyo-3, NERV decides to deploy all Evangelion units. However, before Kensuke embarks on Unit-04, Kaworu Nagisa knocks the boy out and takes his place without permission. Kaworu seek to protect Shinji during this battle, explaining his gesture. However, Unit-04 is not illustrated.

Neon Genesis Evangelions[]

Alternate routes can be unlocked once certain conditions have been fulfilled. In one of these, Shinji does not kill Kaworu and instead convinces him to live. Kaworu will retrieve the Unit-04 from the Dirac Sea and eventually become its pilot.

In the PSP version of the game, Kaworu piloting the Unit-04 can take Shinji's place during the battle against Leliel. As in the anime, after the internal psycho-analysis, Unit-04 will then go berserk and tear apart the Angel.

Battle Orchestra[]

Unit-04 is piloted by Kensuke Aida. He's the final boss of Tōji's story mode and specializes in using guns mostly.

Secret of Evangelion[]

Kyoya Kenzaki discovers that the story around Unit-04's S² Engine was fabricated and that the Evangelion has been brought to NERV Headquarters.
