The UN Artificial Evolution Laboratory outside NERV Headquarters

Gehirn (ゲヒルン, Gehirun?) (German: brain) is the predecessor to NERV and the organization behind the creation of various important technologies including the Magi supercomputers and the Evangelion.

Profile[]

Built before the city of Tokyo-3 or NERV Headquarters were completed, Gehirn operated out of the United Nations Artificial Evolution Laboratory, a tall, concave building in Hakone, Japan. Started after the Second Impact by the UN under the supervision of SEELE, their purpose was to do top secret research and development into technological advancements including Project-E and the Magi amongst other things using knowledge gained about Adam from second impact.

Operational History[]

Founding[]

While the exact date of its inception is unclear, Gehirn was likely formed at some point after the Second Impact by the UN in order to research Adam. They did this work out of various branches across the world, however the most critical to operations was their office in Hakone, Japan in the United Nations Artificial Evolution Laboratory. Since the existence of Gehirn and their projects was top secret, they were known to the public as a United Nations research lab.

Project E and Magi Development[]

Backed by SEELE, Gehirn would begin to research and develop the basis for the Evangelion through Project-E along with development of the Magi supercomputers. In the year 2003, Kōzō Fuyutsuki would be invited by Gendo Ikari to join the organization, an offer which he would reluctantly accept despite his concerns with Gendo's involvement in the second impact.

While not immediately successful in their projects as evidenced by the large number of Failed Evangelion Prototypes, a great amount of progress on both the Magi and Project-E would be made as time went on, however this progress had its costs. In 2004, Evangelion Unit-01 underwent a contact experiment with Project-E scientist Yui Ikari leading to her body and soul being absorbed into the units core. Despite efforts made by the scientists at Gehirn, they were unable to salvage her.

Meanwhile at Branch 3 in Germany, a similar occurrence would happen to scientist Kyoko Zeppelin Sohryu during testing with Evangelion Unit-02 however instead of losing her body and soul, she only lost part of her soul leading to her insanity and eventual suicide.

Despite these setbacks, progress towards Gehirn's goals would continue with the Magi being completed in 2010. Immediately after their completion, Naoko Akagi would commit suicide over the computer giving its completion a somber ending.

Restructuring into NERV[]

After the completion of the Magi super computers and the subsequent suicide of Naoko Akagi, Gehirn would be restructured into NERV. During this restructuring, all former Gehirn employees would join NERV and work on Project-E would continue. At this time the main branch would also move out of their offices and into the newly completed and state of the art NERV Headquarters located nearby.

Divisions[]

Main Branch[]

Located in Hakone, Japan, this was the main branch of operations where the majority of work was done. The staff from this branch would eventually move into NERV Headquarters after Gehirn was restructured into NERV.

Branches 1 & 2[]

Both located in the United States, it is reasonable to assume one of which was located in Massachusetts and the other was located in Nevada as these branches likely became NERV's first and second divisions after Gehirn was restructured into NERV.

Branch 3[]

Located somewhere in Germany, this branch likely became NERV's third division after Gehirn was restructured into NERV.

Trivia[]

  • Although Gehirn is consistently spelled using all-capital letters, it is not an acronym. Many times during the series English words are spelled in all-capital letters as a stylistic choice by the Japanese production team, including words that are obviously not acronyms such as "ADAM" or "SECOND IMPACT". This has unintentionally led to some confusion when words such as "NERV", "SEELE", and "Magi" are spelled with all-capitals, leading to the incorrect assumption that they are acronyms, also referral to the pyramid and inverted pyramid shaped building called Gehirn.
  • It is unclear if the Graveyard was created during Gehirn's era, with NERV transporting it from an undisclosed location into Terminal Dogma and then contributing to it, or if the work of Gehirn was carried on (Project E) with NERV then moving to the GeoFront for space to create the Graveyard.
